    Family 2 Annie Johnson,   b. Abt 1856
Married 11 Apr 1886  Parish of St George, Barnsley, Yorkshire Find all individuals with events at this location
MR 11 Apr 1886  See Notes. Find all individuals with events at this location
    Notes
    • MC. At Parish of St George, Barnsley. After banns. JOSEPH ELLIS T, age 31, (said to be) bachelor, tailor, of St George's. Father JOSEPH ELLIS, tailor. Annie Johnson, age 30, spinster of St Georges. Father Thomas Johnson, shoemaker. Both signed. Witnesses Sarah Hawker and Daniel Hawker, both signed.

JOSEPH ELLIS T was the same person as ELLIS T who married Alice Leach in September 2 1877. The signature on each marriage certificate is similar. They were not divorced and Alice was still alive in 1886, so the second 'marriage' to Annie Johnson must have been bigamous.

  • Notes
    • ELLIS probably appears in the 1881 census as JOSEPH T (24), lodger, unmarried, tailor in Notts. Address: 48 Mount East, St Mary, Nottingham. With Mary Ann Wombwell, 69, widow, her daughter, and other lodgers including Frederick Palmer (66), tailor. JOSEPH said to be born in Manchester.

ELLIS seems to have re-appeared as JOSEPH ELLIS T. He married Annie Johnson April 11 1886 in St George Church, Barnsley, stating he was the son of Joseph Ellis.(It is considered that his father was in fact ELLIS Tattersfield). They had children SETH, WILLIE (possible) and ALFRED JOHNSON.

There was no divorce of ELLIS or anybody else with the surname TATTERSFIELD between the 2 marriages in 1877 and 1886, as informed by The Court Service, London. As Alice was alive the marriage to Annie Johnson seems to have been bigamous.

The original signatures on his two MC's and on the MC of his brother JAMES are all the same.

MC Contd. Witnesses James Tattersfield (brother) and Hannah Leach, both signed.
