Notes
See Hull Packet 15 Nov 1844. John Grocock, Auctioneer, was charged with making a false declaration and return f sale to the Excise."It appearede in evidence that a drunken fellow had gone to a sale, and bid nine shillings for a bed, but his wife, finding that it was worth not more than three or four shillings, refused to have it, and it was consequently sent back to the defendant's shop, where it was resold by private contract. Joseph Tattersfield, the man alluded to ,was severely cross-examined by Mr. Johnson; he had accidentally dropped in at the sale; he had, too, once before dropped into that court; the officer dropped him into the dock; the jury dropped him in guilty of felony; and then the Recorder dropped him into gaol (Much Laughter). After the examination of the witnesses.....the Mayor said "We are of tghe opinion that the case is not proved."
